Bengaluru, Dec 30: The Congress further consolidated its position in the State on Wednesday by winning 13 of the 25 Council seats which went to polls.

Though the ruling party improved its tally in the Council, it is still short of a majority in the Upper House which is crucial for the State government to ensure smooth passage of bills.

Principal Opposition party, the BJP has been pushed to the second position as it managed to win only six seats, while the JD(S) won four seats.

Two seats were won by independents, including BJP rebel and expelled member Basanagouda Patil Yatnal from Vijayapura. IT and BT Minister S R Patil has been re-elected from Bagalkot.

Big jolt

The results have come as a big jolt to the big three of State politics. While the JD(S) lost in Hassan, considered the fiefdom of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, the BJP lost in Shivamogga, home district of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and the Congress lost in Kalaburagi, the stronghold of senior Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge.

The Congress and the BJP had contested 20 seats each, while the JD(S) had fielded its candidates in 18 seats. Of the total 25 seats, the Congress represented 12, the BJP seven and JD(S) five.

Of the 25 sitting MLCs, nine have been re-elected. The BJP and the JD(S) tried to console themselves, saying that they have lost only one seat each as far as their strength in the Council is concerned.

Yatnal’s victory came as an embarrassment to the saffron party.

In Belagavi, independent candidate Vivek Rao Patil emerged victorious by polling highest number of votes among the winners. He secured 3,951 votes.

He was denied a ticket by the BJP and the Congress but his proximity to the politically influential Jharkiholi family ensured his victory.

The Congress rebels in Bengaluru Urban and Dakshina Kannada district, sitting MLC Dayanand Reddy and former minister Jayaprakash Hegde respectively, lost in the polls.

Reddy secured just 19 votes as Congress candidate M Narayanaswamy, who is a close associate of party MLA from K R Puram B A Basavaraj, won.

Former chief minister N Dharam Singh’s son Vijay Singh from Bidar, K C Kondaiah from Ballari (both Congress); former chief minister Jagadish Shettar’s brother Pradeep Shettar from Dharwad, former minister Kota Srinivas Poojari from Dakshina Kannada (both BJP); and movie producer Sandesh Nagaraj from Mysuru (JD-S), are among the prominent winners. Many candidates who have won are relatives of important leaders.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
