Udupi, Mar 12: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led government has announced its first-ever sports policy for Karnataka weeks ahead of State Assembly pols.
Giving details of the policy at a press meet here on Sunday, Sports and Youth Empowerment Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said that the policy lays emphasis on nurturing sportspersons who can excel at national and international levels.
"The Cabinet gave its approval for the policy on March 8. The policy will come into force immediately. Separate funds will be earmarked in the next budget for implementing the policy," the minister said.
The Karnataka State Sports Policy 2018 says that every taluk and town municipality in the State will have at least one active and well-endowed community sports centre.
It said that every district will have at least one multi-sports coaching centre, one swimming pool of Olympic standard each with professional management, appropriate equipment, trained coaches, management information systems and effective community outreach programmes. “Physical education to be implemented as a compulsory subject in the syllabus of every public school across the State and 100% of children in Karnataka aged 6-14 will be involved in at least half an hour a day of organised physical activity/sport,” it said.
According to the policy, Bengaluru will be developed as the Centre for Sports Excellence in select sports with infrastructure of international standards.
The strength of qualified sports coaches in Karnataka will be increased as per requirement.
It said that a professional management body may be constituted to support the Sports Authority of Karnataka (SAK).
The SAK will constitute special committees on critical areas and each of these committees shall be responsible for the execution and development of a particular aspect of the policy. An important committee will be sports in education committee. This committee would facilitate schools, colleges and universities in the State to reorient their infrastructure, courses and approaches to encourage and enable youngsters to play sports.
