Mangaluru, May 7: Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Jacintha Vijaya Alfred and Deputy Mayor Purushotham Chitrapura were felicitated at an interaction programme organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mangaluru at the chamber building here on Thursday.
On the occasion, a memorandum was submitted to the Mayor to take serious cognizance of civic issues such as increase in solid waste management cess for industries and commercial buildings, lack of footpaths and pavements for pedestrians in the city, traffic congestion and improvement of Nehru Maidan for sports.
The memorandum also take appropriate action to promote manufacturing and infrastructure in Mangaluru including Mangaluru SEZ Limited in order to invite more industries to the region, an Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) at Ganjimutt and development of IT and ITES projects in Dakshina Kannada such as establishment of SPARK (Startup Park).
Promotion of Tourism in the district with development of beaches and promotion of Mangalore Dasara as the Festival of the city, as well as bringing Mangaluru under the ‘Smart City’ concept were also urged to be considered for the overall development and progress of the region.
Speaking after the felicitation, Mayor Jacintha said that all attempts were being made to transform Mangaluru city into a garbage-free zone with an view to promote better health and sanitation among the city. Efforts will be made to convert Mangaluru into a fully garbage-free city.
“Efforts will also be made to decongest the heavy traffic in the congested parts of the city. The concept of introducing Smart City will be discussed with various departments and officials to turn it into a reality,” she said.
She also assured that the MCC would continue to take several precautionary measures to reduce the spread of malaria and water-borne diseases in the city limits. Regular council meetings are being held in this regard and full cooperation has been extended to the health department to eradicate malaria from the city, she informed, assuring to look into the other demands made in the memorandum.
KCCI president Nigam B Vasani welcomed the gathering and submitted the memorandum to the Mayor. KCCI vice president Rammohan Pai Maroor introduced the guests on the occasion.
