“I am Health Minister U T Khader. I hope you are fine,” said Mr Khader when the helpless doctor, was wondering whether it was a dream or reality.
The duty doctor had no answer as he was caught red handed in deep sleep by the minister. He was supposed to attend the patients in the night.
Mr Khader also made enquiries with the patients on the treatment being provided.
Sources said that when the minister checked the attendance register he found wrong entries and proxies for nurses and doctors who were not present in the hospital during the inspection.
He also took the officials to task for not keeping the hospital clean. “What happened to Rs 1 lakh fund sanctioned by the government to the hospital to maintain hygiene?” questioned Mr Khader.
ZP member Raheem Sheik complained to Mr Khader that the hospital authorities had charged a poor patient for using ambulance.
The minster already had lost patience as a locked gate welcomed him at the entrance. “Don't you allow patients to enter the hospital in the night?” asked Mr Khader.
Meanwhile, two cops from Bhatkal Police Station rushed to the hospital to provide security to the Minister. However, Mr Khader asked them to return saying he doesn't need any security.
The Tuesday night's surprise inspection by Mr Khader shocked entire hospital staff. Before leaving the hospital, the Minster warned the doctors, nurses and other staff not to repeat their mistake.
