Madikeri, Nov 1: The Bharatiya Janata Party has suffered a blow in Kodagu district as it failed to get a majority in any of the three town panchayats (TPs) – Somwarpet, Virajpet and Kushalnagar – that went to the polls recently.

The results of the elections that were announced on Wednesday came as a rude shock to the BJP, which had managed a clean sweep in Kodagu in the assembly polls.
In Somwarpet, of the 11 seats, the BJP came in a close second, along with JD(S), with three seats – sliding from four in the previous elections — while the Congress emerged as the single largest party, bagging four. With Congress likely to stitch an alliance with the JD(S), the BJP will have to remain content occupying the opposition benches.
Among the upsets in the election was the loss of former Somwarpet TP president Vijayalakshmi, who lost to Sheela D’ Souza of the Congress in ward 6. Meanwhile, BJP rebel candidate Shubhakar defeated the saffron party’s official candidate Pramod in ward 8.
