Mangalore, Aug 6: For the second consecutive day the Kumaradhara bridge, the nearest connecting link to the temple town of Kukke Subrahmanya remained submerged on Wednesday.
Following this vehicle disembarked passengers on the other side and people had to wade in knee deep waters to reach the other side.
Those on the temple side and had to reach Gundya, which is 23 km away from Kukke, had to take the circuitous Puttur-Uppinangady route which is more than 100 kms. The other shorter route of 80 kms is the Kadaba-Uppinangady route, but has the Hosmutt Bridge which is also prone to submersion when Kumardhara goes under water.
This is the eighth time the bridge went underwater this monsoon. On schools and colleges in the temple town Kukke declared holiday after the bridge was submerged twice in a day.
The bridge submerged at 5am and got cleared at 6am on Tuesday. Again good rainfall in the catchment areas saw the bridge go under water at 7am to 11.30am on the same day. On Wednesday too the bridge went under water.
Even on Monday, the bridge submerged and most affected were the students since the schools and colleges let go the students at 3.40pm. The students who had to reach their homes a few kms away from Kukke had to hang to overcrowded private vehicles to reach their homes by a circuitous route. Buses resumed their services after 10pm.
