Bengaluru, Oct 25: Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy today directed the Karnataka Milk Federation to directly purchase maize at the rate of Rs 1300 per quintal from farmers to the extent of two lakh metric tonnes immediately, to insulate farmers from falling prices and exploitation in the hands of middlemen.

Speaking to top officials of Food, civil supplies, animal husbandry and other departments on fixing Minimum Support for maize and rice, he said KMF makes huge purchases of maize to produce cattle feed and instead of sourcing it from other sources it should purchase maize directly from farmers.
He said the total production of maize during the current season was expected to be to the tune of 54 lakh metric tonnes and organisations like KMF purchasing maize directly from farmers can help them from exploitation in the hands of middlemen.
He said the government was ready to provide a grant of Rs 50 various cooperative milk unions for this purpose.
He said concerned departments like food and civil supplies could also purchase rice at the rate of Rs 1200 per quintal from farmers for PDS purpose.
