Kundapur, Jul 10: In a gut-wrenching tragedy a 7-year-old girl was swept away by floodwaters after she slipped into river near Kollur in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district.

At around 9 a.m. on Friday, accompanied by her mother and friend, Vismaya Devadiga (7) was walking to school when tragedy took place.
The girl slipped and fell off the wooden footbridge while crossing Chakra River at Maranakatte village.
The makeshift footbridge was up by the villagers, whose demand for a concrete bridge was ignore by the government for many years.
Even though the footbridge lacks safety measures no such tragedy has been reported so far. However, due to incessant rains the river was overflowing on Friday morning.
It is learnt that the Class 3 student was holding her mother Jalaja Devadiga’s while walking on the bridge. But in the middle of the bridge she reportedly told her mother that she wanted to walk ahead alone and started running.
Unfortunately, the girl lost balance and fell off the bridge and washed away even before her mother tried to rescue her.
As soon as the news began to spread the villagers began searching for the girl. Another group of people started search near another footbridge located a couple of kilometres away in the direction of the water flow.
After an hour fire personnel also joined the search operation, but the girl was not found till afternoon.
