Mangaluru, Jun 25: A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall created a deadly gorge, which swallowed three motorbikes within a second at the pavement in front of bar and restaurant in Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city last night.

The people inside the Maya Bar and locals screamed in fear when the land caved in before their eyes making a huge noise at around 11 p.m. A few boozers inside the bar said that they thought it was a bomb blast carried out by terrorists.

Fortunately, the incident did not cause any reported loss of life or injury as those who had parked motorbikes at the pavement had already entered the bar.

Lucky escape

A Honda Activa, a Bajaj Avenger and a Honda Dio belonging to Anil, Danny and Ozzy respectively, were fallen into the suddenly opened well and buried under the mud when the land caved in.

A few minutes before the incident, the place was crowded with people, local residents said.

A team of police from jurisdictional Ullal police station rushed to the spot and they also called fire brigade immediately. However, they could do nothing but preventing the bike owners from approaching the crater.

A crane also was brought to the spot to lift the buried vehicles. However, the fire fighters hesitated to entre the crater. Meanwhile, a local youth identified as Manoj came forward to lead the operation.

Though he had no training, Manoj fearlessly entered the crater after getting permission from Ullal police inspector and managed to lift all the three vehicles through crane.

Covered well

According to local residents and regular visitors at the bar, there was well in front of the Maya Bar. During the highway widening, the well was closed and a pavement was created on the same spot.

They accused the bar owners of not properly filling the old well with mud while creating a pavement on it. “Instead of filling the empty space with soil, they covered the well with a concrete layer and then same space was converted into a parking lot for the bar visitors,” said a local resident.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
