Dharwad, Oct 14: Mathe Mahadevi, the first female Jagadguru, or spiritual head of a South Indian Lingayat community, has supported legalising prostitution to check the increasing sex crimes against children and women.

Mahadevi criticised girls studying in colleges and working in MNCs who wear skimpy clothes.
She said they were inviting unwanted attention and danger by doing so and were becoming soft targets of perverts and sex criminals. In her view, women need to understand the rich tradition of India and wear clothes that reflect their customs. On their part, parents should not allow their daughters to venture out during late evenings, she noted.
Mahadevi said it was œunfortunate that sexual allegations were being made out against Raghaveshwara Bharathi, the seer of Ramachandrapura Mutt. Only a detailed inquiry by a State-level agency can bring out the truth.
If the charges against the seer are found to be true, he should immediately step down, she demanded. According to Mahadevi, the statements given by the alleged rape victim have raised suspicions.
Some women misuse the laws framed for their protection and indulge in blackmailing. The inquiry committee should investigate the matter thoroughly and punish the guilty, she noted.
