Mangaluru, Oct 25: As many as eight tourists including women have been saved from drowning by the lifeguards and surfers at Panambur beach in two incidents.

The incidents took place in two spots known for their vicious rip currents, Yatish said adding the three tourists would have been drowned but for the alertness of mind shown by the surfers in joining the rescue effort.
While five were saved by lifeguards of PBTDP, the remaining three were rescued by surfers undergoing training at Panambur beach.
Mahadeva Prabhu (24), from Shivapura, Chamarajanagara, was the first one to be rescued by the lifeguards of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project (PBTDP) on Saturday. He was among a group of four tourists, who visited the beach.
Yatish said, even as the lifeguards were pulling out Mahadeva, Girija, 35, Manju, 37, Renuka, 38, and Yogashree, 18, from Kurubanahalli were sucked in. They were among a group of 15 people who had visited the beach.
Barring the teenager, who had taken in lot of Sea water, the rest were fazed by near life and death situation, he said.
