Kasaragod, Mar 25: Lauding the police for swiftly arresting the accused in the recent murder of a young madrasa teacher at a mosque room at Choori here, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has said the RSS-BJP activists were ‘unleashing communal violence under the influence of liquor and narcotic products.’

Police have managed to arrest three miscreants - S Nitin Rao (18), a resident of Kelugudde, Kasargod, N Akhilesh (25) of Sanna Kodlu, and Ajesh alia Appu (20) of Appayyanagar, Kelugudde – in connection with the murder of 34-year-old Mohammed Riyaz. All three arrested have been remanded in judicial custody for two weeks. The police have recovered the weapons and a motorbike used for the crime.

The arrested have reportedly confessed that they killed the Muslim clerics to trigger communal unrest in Kasaragod. Police says, “Anyone who came in their way would have been subjected to their madness that night.” Ajesh walked into the building where the Moulavi slept and Nitin and Akhilesh followed him on a bike. Ajesh allegedly attacked the Moulavi and when a neighbour from the next room came out, hearing the cries, Nitin attacked him with a stone.

The CPI(M)’s district secretariat, in a statement on Friday, said the murder was a fallout of the ‘criminal mindset of the Sangh Parivar activists,’ who, it alleged, were bent upon vitiating communal amity on petty grounds.

The Left party underscored the need to isolate the communal agenda designed by the RSS-BJP activists to restore normalcy in the trouble-torn localities.

Countering the CPI(M)’s assertions, BJP district president K. Sreekanth said that his party had all along been seeking exemplary punishment to those involved in the heinous crime.

He criticised the IUML and the CPI(M) for trying to gain political mileage by blaming the BJP for the murder.

Call for peace

There is an urgent need to restore lasting peace in the communally fragile localities in Kasaragod, which witnessed a series of violence in the backdrop of fatal attack on a young madrasa teacher here recently, said human rights activists here.

The authorities should act firmly to bring to book those involved in the murder of Muhammed Riyaz, said a group of human rights activists under the banner of ‘Oruma’ at a meeting held here on Thursday.

The meeting exhorted people to maintain communal harmony in Kasaragod, aptly regarded as ‘saptabhasha sangama bhoomi’ (confluence of seven languages) by frustrating the evil designs of those bent upon vitiating the communal harmony of the region.

People should be on guard against those spreading rumours that could pave way for recurring violence among communities that have the tradition of living in harmony, human rights activist T.V. Rajendran said.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday, April 29, shared a letter purportedly written by BJP leader Devaraj Gowda to the Karnataka state president of the saffron party expressing concern about the pendrive containing sleazy videos of JD(S) leader and Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna.

The letter was apparently written on December 8, 2023.

The letter, written in Kannada by the Hassan BJP leader states that 2,976 clips were already with Congress leaders and would be ammo for the grand old party during the Lok Sabha elections. The letter also states that if Revanna is allowed to contest under the NDA banner, it is likely to negatively impact the BJP's image in the state.

Sharing this letter, Khera launched an attack on the BJP, asking why the party had chosen to enter into an alliance with JD(S) despite knowing about the pendrive. He also questioned the lack of action, sharing the stage with Prajwal Revanna, and asked who helped him 'escape to Germany'.

Khera also questioned PM Narendra Modi's silence on the matter. Notably, the PM has been vocal about women suffering sexual abuse elsewhere in the country, when a leader of the opposition party has been involved. Modi attacked the TMC government over Sheikh Shahjahan's actions in Sandeshkhali, which allegedly involve sexual harassment and illegal land grabbing.

The Congress leader, however, remained confident that Modi would stay mum on the Hassan sex scandal issue.

"Modi ji will be in Karnataka the entire day today. I can guarantee that he won’t find the courage to utter even a single word on this horrific case in the state wherein his alliance’s politician went around recording thousands of sex videos of several women in his pen drive, and has now absconded abroad!," Khera said on X (formerly Twitter).

While Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has ordered a special probe into the incident, the JD(S) has distanced itself from Prajwal with H D Kumaraswamy saying that while he wanted to wait for facts to come out after the probe, there was no question of forgiving someone who had committed a crime as per the law.

A sexual harassment and stalking case has been filed against former Karnataka Minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal, who is at the centre of the Hassan scandal.

A woman complainant said that she worked in Revanna's house from 2019 for three and a half years. During her time there, Revenna allegedly misbehaved with her, as did Prajwal, according to the woman's claims. She also claimed Prajwal sexually assaulted her repeatedly.

She also claimed the MP had used obscene language with her daughter during video calls, forcing her to block the number and quit her job.

H D Revanna is the elder son of JD(S) supremo and former PM H D Deve Gowda, and Prajwal is the party patriarch's grandson.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."
