Mangaluru, Feb 3: In what could have been a major tragedy had local residents failed to exhibit their presence of mind, high-tension electricity wires collapsed on a busy road at Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday evening.

The tragedy took place when a roadside tree, which was razed to the ground to facilitate ongoing work on national highway, brought down an electric pole.
The works of road widening and fly-over construction have been going on a war footing at Thokkottu. On Wednesday a few electric poles were shifted to new locations near Netaji Hospital. Meanwhile it was necessary to raze a tree to the ground to facilitate the widening work.
However, due to the miscalculation of workers, a branch of tree fell on an electric pole, which broke into two pieces and the above portion of the pole fell on the highway along with the high-tension power lines.
Meanwhile, a speeding tourist bus coming from Kerala, passed through the same power line. This caused a small fire on the road. However, no tragedy took place as the wire did not touch the body of the bus.
Local residents and workers, who witnessed the scene, immediately swung into action and stopped movement of the vehicle from both directions of the road.
The incident led to traffic jam on the highway at least for half an hour. Local residents, highway workers, police personnel and Mescom workers joined their hands together to smoothen traffic flow on the highway.
