Mangaluru, Apr 9: A Kerala-based man was caught by local residents while he was attempting robbery by wearing burqa near Ullal Dargah, where a quinquennial Urs is underway.
The accused has been identified as Salim (32), a resident of Payyanur in Kerala. He was later arrested Ullal police.
According to the police, one Abdul Rawoof was stopped by a person wearing a burqa in Ullal on Tuesday around 8 p.m. The person held a knife to Rawoof’s throat and asked him to give him money.
Suspecting the mannerisms, Rawoof opened the veil and found him the person to be a man and raised an alarm.
The person escaped. However, he was chased and caught by the local residents. Later Ullal police arrested Salim and produced him before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded him to police custody.
Local residents said that he was had visited Sayyid Madani Dargah before trying to rob Abdul Rawoof.
The police are trying to find the antecedents of Salim who allegedly disguised himself in burqa.
