
K. Annamalai, Assistant Superintendent of Police, said that the accused, H. Jaggu (40), a farm worker, had raped a 25-year-old mentally challenged woman at a village in Karkala taluk on August 21 evening.
Jaggu entered the house when the woman's mother was out, and he sexually assaulted her. The police came to know about this incident on August 22 evening after the woman's mother contacted them.
The woman was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal for medical examination on Friday. A police team then went in search of Jaggu.
In the meantime, Jaggu sensed that the police were looking for him. So he consumed poison and attempted suicide at the Bus Stand at Bajagoli village. Passersby rushed him to the Karkala taluk government hospital, from where he was moved to the Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore on Friday.
The police suspect that Jaggu might have sexually assaulted the woman earlier too. A case had been registered at Karkala Rural Police Station and investigations were on, the police said.
