Mangaluru, Mar 29: The fourth additional district and sessions court on Wednesday sentenced a murder convict to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000 on him. Judge Nerale Veerabhadra Bhavani passed the order.
Sanjeeva Poojary, 47, a resident of Koyyur village in Bantwal taluk was convicted of murdering Padmanabha Poojary, 51, of the same village on April 3, 2016. Balakrishna Poojary, who is a neighbour and distant relative of the convicted and boss of the victim, had lodged complaint.
Special public prosecutor Harishchandra Udiawar said as many as 16 witnesses including eyewitnesses examined the accused, and scientific evidence was produced in the case.
B R Lingappa, who was then a circle inspector, prepared the charge-sheet for the case. Judge Nerale Veerabhadraiah Bhavani pronounced the judgment.
Sanjeeva had taken objection to the victim working in the plantation of Balakrishna Poojary and using a particular path to reach it. When Padmanabha did not heed his warnings, Sanjeeva slit his throat.
The Belthangady police arrested Sanjeeva the next day. The then police inspector B.R. Lingappa had initially registered a case and conducted the investigation, which was continued by his successor Nemiraj, who also filed a charge-sheet before the court. Harishchandra Udiyavar conducted the prosecution.
