Mangalore, Oct 4: There was lot of confusion at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) when the passengers alighting from Air India Express flights from Dubai and Doha found their luggage missing at the baggage counter at the airport on Friday night.
Upon inquiry, it was learnt that the baggage had not arrived at the Mangalore airport, and may have been left behind or stranded in Dubai and Doha.
Most of the passengers whose luggage had been left behind were distressed over the delay
Although the delay in delivery of the baggage of the passengers could not be blamed on the AIE officials at the airport in Mangalore, several passengers were disgruntled with the handling of their baggage and confronted the officials over the delay.
Even while the authorities have assured that the missing luggage would be brought in the next flights from Doha and Dubai, those who had arrived from Doha were further worried since the next flight from Doha arrives on Monday.
Most establishments in the Middle East countries have a long week of holidays owing to Bakrid, and hence the past week has been a peak season with expatriates coming home for the holidays.
While AIE officials at Mangalore maintain that the luggage was left behind to the increase in the passenger load in the incoming flights, since the flights were full, the passengers were nonetheless irked at the inconsiderate delay in their luggage.
One of the officials said that they had been facing the inconvenience since the past three days since the passenger load in the Mangalore-bound flights was over its capacity. Hence, the flights had no option but to leave behind some luggage to accommodate all its passengers, he said. He added that the airlines did not restrict its passengers from carrying more than one bag of luggage, due to which the passengers carried several bags at a time, resulting in the increase of overall baggage load over the capacity mark in such flights.
The AIE officials have assured the passengers that their missing luggage would be arriving over the next flight from their respective boarding destinations. Meanwhile, the passengers have no option but to wait until their luggage arrives at Mangalore.
