Mangalore, May 12: Two Kannada medium students have made Dakshina Kannada district proud by becoming toppers in SSLC examinations in the state this year.

Ayisha from Moodbidri and Lavanya from Mangalore have emerged as sixth and 10 toppers in Kannada medium in the state.

M Ayisha of Alva's Kannada Medium School, Moodbidri has scored 612 marks and has stood sixth in the State. She has scored 122 in Kannada, 95 in English, 99 in Hindi, 100 in Social Studies, 96 in Science and 100 in Mathematics.

She said that she used to work hard from beginning. “I used to cover the lessons on a daily basis. Teachers and parents have been supportive throughout. As I was staying in hostel, we students used to clear our doubts with each other,” she said.

“My aim is to pursue CA. I am interested in commerce stream. In school, I used to take part in singing competition.”

She hails from Killur in Belthangady. Abdurrahman Musliyar, father of Ayisha, an agriculturist said that as Ayisha was good in studies, he enrolled her to Alva's School for ninth standard. “I am happy with her achievement. My eldest daughter is pursuing her MSc in Chemistry at Alva's College.”

Lavanya, a student of Lourdes Kannada Medium School, Bejai, secured 611 out of 625 marks (97.76 per cent). She is the daughter of Balasubramanya Padakannaya and Poornima couple. Lavanya scored cent percent marks in mathematics and social studies.

Lavanya said that she has been working consistently for scoring good marks. “I have targeted to score above 600 marks but did not expect to get into the top ten. Hard work, guidance by my teachers, parents and sister helped me to achieve the feat. I will take up commerce stream in PUC. My aim is to complete MBA and find a job in banking sector.”

“Special classes in the school helped me to score good marks. I did not attend tuition classes. Instead, it was my sister Chaitanya who used to guide me all along. I used to wake up and read early in the morning.”

“I am excited and happy over my results,” she added.

Lavanya's father Balasubramanya Padakannaya said “I had expected my daughter to score between 610 and 615 marks. She is a hard worker.”

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.
