Mangalore, Feb 22: Several social activists and like-minded organisations held a candlelight vigil in protest against the 'anti-people' and 'draconian' Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA) in front of Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Friday night.
The protestors, led by People's Movement Against UAPA, said that the law was exploited by law-enforcing-agencies across the country. Illegal detention and torture of the citizens was evident under the law. The law has led to the oppression of justice, liberty and honor of the citizens, they said.
Being implemented in 1967 and amended three times in 2012 the UAPA is more draconian and anti-people than any other black laws like Tata and POTA, they said.
The government should repeal such black law, they demanded.
Apart from night vigil, the People's Movement Against UAPA, will be conducting a mass public meeting on March 5 at New Delhi.
Poster campaigns, hand bill distribution, booklet distribution, post card movement and seminar will also be held as part of the movement.
