Mangalore, Oct 7: The Mangalore City Police have busted a gang of dacoits involved in looting of lorry drivers on highways, at Maroli Jodukatte.
The five alleged dacoits identified as Mohammed Azeem (23), Ahmed Saddiq (19), Nissar Hussain (23), Hasanabba (23) and Shashidhar Y (30), were arrested by the Mangalore East police for allegedly threatening drivers of inter-State lorries and stealing money.
The police said the five accused would roam around in the city during the day and target drivers of the lorries parked by the side of the National Highways in the night.
These dacoits eyed the Rs. 20.000 to Rs. 30,000 that the drivers carry along their journey for fuel and other sundry expenses.
Apart from drivers of lorries parked near KPT junction in Mangalore, these dacoits targeted those in Uppinangady and in Shirady near Sakaleshpur.
As many as seven cases have been registered against the accused group. One driver in Uppinangady was grievously injured by the group during a dacoity.
The police worked on the last four digits of registration number of the vehicle used in a dacoity near KPT and zeroed in on the accused. Two cars, five weapons, two packets of chilli powder, four mobile phones and Rs. 12,750 have been recovered from them.
