Mangalore, Feb 28: In an apparent act of hate-crime, a gang of around 50 thugs ambushed two vehicles that were legally transporting cattle near Pumpwell circle in the city and brutally assaulted five persons on board. The assailants, allegedly belonging to a Hindutva outfit also tried to rob the cattle by hijacking the vehicles.
The victims have been identified as Cibi Cheriyan (44), a resident of Manikadavu in Iritti, Naufal (26) and Shabeer (24), residents of Nellyadi, and Dominique Topo (40) and Sibilo (33), both hailing from Assam.
The incident took place at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, when the five men were legally transporting the milch cows from Nellyadi to Kerala for the purpose of farming with all the mandatory documents.
The victims had obtained all necessary documents from the Gram Panchayat and Nellyadi police outpost in advance.
Sources said that the cows are bought from a farm in Nellyadi under the Milkshed Development Programme of the Department of Dairy Development, Kerala. According to one of the victims, they had to handover the cows to a homemaker by name Thangamma Sebastian, who rears milch cattle in Pariyaram.
“The miscreants waylaid our vehicle and began to assault us without any reason. Even though we tried to convince them that we are not illegal traffickers, they did not bother to see the documents,” said Naufal, who was driving one of the two vehicles. He said that most of the assailants were drunk.
Police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and seized the vehicles hijacked by assailants. The vehicles along with cattle were later shifted the jurisdictional Mangalore Rural police station for verification. Police sources said that they would allow transporting the cattle after the verification of documents.
