The possibility of airport staff involving in transporting the yellow metal smuggled into the airport to outside its premises where smugglers would be waiting, have put the the department of revenue intelligence (DRI) officials on high alert. They are determined to crack down on the inside men and curb the crimes.
Last Friday an air passenger had dumped 2kg of gold in the airport immigration hall toilet dust bin. After this case came to light, the DRI is now actively probing the involvement of airport staff in smuggling operations.
Sameer Mohammed (28) from Kasaragod had arrived by the 10pm Air India Express flight at the Mangalore International Airport from Dubai on Friday. Before proceedings towards immigration counters he had entered the toilet with some packet in his hand. The DRI sleuths who had noticed this prevented him from leaving the airport and found that he had dumped two bars of gold weighing a kilogram each in the toilet dust bin.
According to the accused, he was instructed to dump the bars in the dust bin and he neither knows the handler nor the person to whom it was delivered. The DRI official said that the pickup person for the consignment could be anyone from toilet maintenance staff to airport officials who had access to immigration section.
This is the first instance that a contraband has been seized in this manner and DRI officials expressed surprise at the newer modes of smuggling being discovered by smugglers.
