Mangalore, Aug 16: With a charter of demands such as introduction of budget airlines operating to Mangalore from Middle East countries, cancellation of user fee at Mangalore International Airport, increase in luggage limit and others, Mangalore International Airport Users Forum (MIAUF) has decided to place their demands before the concerned authorities to ensure better service and facilities to NRIs who frequent the airport in Mangalore.
With the support and participation of several NRI organisations based in Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Muscat, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait) such as Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha, Karnataka Sangha Dubai, Sharjah Karnataka Sangha, Kannada Sangha Al-Ain, UAE Tulu Koota Dubai, Karnataka Sangha Dubai, Karnataka Sangha Bahrain, Karnataka Sangha Muscat, Karnataka Sangha Kuwait and KESEF Kasargod, members of the forum have planned to organise a dharna in front of the deputy commissioner's office on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference here on Saturday, former Airport Director and chief co-ordinator of Karnataka NRI Forum M R Vasudeva said that the flight passengers who frequented the airport in Mangalore sought a permanent solution to their problems. Representatives of various NRI organisations of Gulf countries have come together to constitute the forum to impress upon the concerned governments and airport authorities to address and fulfill their demands, he said.
He said that currently there was no forum or organisation to address the problems of NRIs and local passengers who frequent the international airport.
MIAUF co-ordinator Prabhakar Ambalathere said that the flight rates charged by low-cost airlines to Kozhikode, Cochin and Thiruvanathapuram were very low while the flight rates charged by full-fledged airlines to Mangalore Airport were higher. If budget airlines start their operations in Mangalore, the competition between airlines will reduce the cost of flight rates to GCC countries, he said.
Moreover, the service of Air India Express flight to UAE which started eight years ago was disappointing with regard to inefficient handling of baggage and inconvenient flight timings. The luggage limit currently allowed per person in the flights is 17 kgs which is insufficient for the passengers returning to India from the Middle East. Hence, the luggage limit and limit of gold allowed per person in the airport should be increased, he said.
He said that the forum also demanded a full-fledged passport office in Mangalore, cancellation or revision of user fee, distribution of proper compensation to the kin of the victims of the Bajpe air crash and also the reconstitution of an NRI welfare forum that existed previously.
He said that if the concerned authorities failed to respond to their problems, a delegation from the forum would directly travel to Delhi and meet the union aviation minister with their charter of demands.
Mr Vasudeva said that the dharna would include paying homage to the victims of the IXE air crash at the crash site near the international airport on Monday, before marching to the DC's office.
