Mangalore, Mar 7: After the post of the mayor of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) was reserved for a general candidate, Congress, which has a majority in the house with 35 corporators, is yet to take a final call on who will be chosen for the post.
According to party sources, the decision is likely to be made on March 12.

With the general candidate, all the 35 Congress corporators are eligible to contest for the post of MCC mayor. Two strong contenders have emerged in the house with senior Congress corporators Harinath and Lancelot Pinto.
Both are of the opinion that either one has a good chance of getting the post, but would abide by the decision taken by the party leadership. Lancelot Pinto had previously been fielded by the Congress from the constituency of Mangalore South in state assembly elections.
The post of the mayor had been vacant for close to a year after ULB elections were held in March 2013, due to a long legal issue over the reservation category. Due to the same reason, the elected council, comprising of 20 BJP members and five others apart from 35 Congress members, was unable to assemble for regular council meetings.
The post of deputy mayor has been set aside for a female general candidate.
With this, the district of Dakshina Kannada will see some electoral action before the Lok Sabha elections scheduled on April 17.
