Mangalore, Aug 16: This was no ordinary Yagna but one aimed at ending sexual assault on women and children across India!
Performed at the Hosanadu Kodyadka Sri Annapoorneshwari Temple, at Horanadu, Kodiyadka Kshetra near Moodbidri, around 40 km from Mangalore, the Yagna attracted around 2,000 devotees including men, women and children.
At the stroke of 12.05 p.m. on Friday former chief of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Harikrishna Punaroor and his fire in the Homa Kunda of the temple with a great expectations' during the Yagna conducted by NRI businessman Kodyadka Jayaram Heggade, who has been living in Oman for the last three decades.
Having built the temple in Kodyadka in 1996 and being its founder trustee, Heggade, had also conducted a similar Chandika Yaga at the same temple last month to pray for the recovery of ailing Oman sultan, Qaboos bin Said al-Said.
After completing all necessary rituals in five-hour-long Yagna on Friday evening, Heggade quoted Indian prime minister Narendra Modi's words: “When we here about incidents of rape, our heads hang in shame…”
He said that being an NRI, it hurts him very much when foreigners consider India unsafe for women. “Once I had invited a woman doctor known to me in Oman to India. When she inquired me whether India was safe for women that time, I was shocked,” he said revealing that increasing rapes on women and children had maligned the country's image in the world.
Asked whether a Yagna could end rapes in the country, Heggade replied that it is quite natural for common people to seek the intervention and help of “freely available god” in their personal and public affairs.
