Mangalore, May 30: Over 20 like-minded organisations in the district came together under the banner Kabeer Nyaya Okkoota ' and held a mass protest rally on Friday demanding a high level investigation and justice in the shootout case where Mohammed Kabeer was killed when ANF personnel fired at him at a checkpost in Sringeri a month ago.

Organisations such as Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV), People 's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Ahinda, Mangalore Catholic Sabha, Students Islamic Organisation (SIO), Karnataka Missions Network, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and others participated in the mass protest rally which began from Ambedkar Circle and culminated in front of the Deputy Commissioner 's office here on Friday. Women 's activist Gulabi Bilimale inaugurated the protest rally.

The prominent demands of the protesters include that the primary investigation be conducted by a commission led by a Supreme Court judge and stringent action be taken against those political leaders who justified the murder of Kabeer.

Addressing the public meeting following the rally, K L Ashok, state general secretary of KKSV, in his keynote speech said that the killing of Kabeer by ANF personnel while he was transporting cattle was an assassination of democracy.

While the killing should have been condemned by all groups and parties irrespective of religion, caste and creed, two political leaders have justified and supported the act. The irresponsible and provocative statements made by MLA of Chikmagalur C T Ravi and MLA of Karkala Sunil Kumar in connection to the Kabeer killing have showed their unworthiness of being representatives of the people. Such statements inciting killing of people are seditious, and they should be immediately arrested for this under the Representation of the People Act, he said.

He said that the coastal region had had its share of communal clashes which sparked under the pretext of cattle transportation. However, the government and police system has failed in taking strict action and maintaining the law and order situation in the district. It is ironic that the ministers from the district have also not raised their voice against this, he said.

He pointed out that as per the National Human Rights Commission guidelines, the family of the deceased was entitled to compensation amount, demanding the immediate release of Rs 10 lakhs announced by the state government for Kabeer 's family.

Mohammed Kunhi, state joint secretary of Jamat-e-Islami Hind, Fr William Martis from Udupi diocese, Shafi Bellare, Puttur taluk president of PFI and poet Jyothi Guruprasad also addressed the public meeting.

Suresh Bhat Bakrabail, Dakshina Kannada district president of KKSV, presided over the public meeting.

P B D 'Sa, state president of PUCL, Vasudeva Boloor, president of Ahinda, G Rajashekhar, Udupi district president of KKSV, Ali Hasan from KKSV, Jaleel Krishnapura from SDPI, and several others participated in the protest rally and meeting.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
