Mangalore, Oct 7: Mangalore's golden girl Machettira Raju Poovamma, who bagged two medals in Asian Games 2014, was accorded a rousing reception in the city on her arrival from South Korea on Tuesday.
Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, minister for sports, youth services and fisheries K Abhaychadra Jain, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, Zilla Panchayat president Asha Thimmappa Gowda, Mangalore Deputy Mayor Kavitha, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo, former Mangalore International Airport Director M R Vasudeva among others were present to receive her.
A Poovamma was taken in a grand procession from Ambedkar Circle at the heart of the city to Mangala Stadium amidst cheering crowd.
Responding to the honour, Poovamma said that she is always grateful for the love of the people of the country and state.
œI am always grateful for the love of Indians, Kannadigas and Mangaloreans, she said adding that the presence of ministers and other leaders increased her happiness.
Seeking support from the national and state athletic federation to the athletes she said that government's support is pivotal in the growth of athletes.
Stating that Asian Games has increased her great confidence, she said that her next prominent aim is Rio Olympics to be held in 2016. œI will continue my hard work, he said.
Poovamma has won a gold in the women's 4x400 metres relay by setting a record timing of 3:28:68 and a bronze in the women's 400 metre race event in Asian Games 2014.
