Mangalore, Feb 23: Student power took over the city streets on Saturday as several hundred students staged a protest march from Dr Ambedkar circle to Deputy Commissioner's office, urging the withdrawal of Nethravati diversion project at Yettinahole.
People of Mangalore cutting across party lines also joined the protest.
Addressing the protestors, former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty termed the project as ill-conceived and skewed.
He said that the betrayal of people of Dakshina Kannada by few vested political interests would not be tolerated.
The project seeks to divert nearly 24 tmc of water from upstream tributaries of Nethravati and pump them towards parched areas of Chikballapur, Kolar, Tumkur.
Dinesh Holla, activist, warned that the hastily-planned project would lead to water scarcity in the coastal and the plains of Karnataka. “One can spend money to rebuild cities and monuments, but reconstituting a damaged river and its ecosystem is next to impossible,” he said.
