Mangaluru, Jun 16: Mangalore University will confer Honoris Causa (honorary doctorate) to three eminent personalities during the 33rd Annual Convocation of the university to be held on Wednesday at Mangala Auditorium, Mangalore University campus in Mangalagangothri, said Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K Byrappa.

Announcing this at a press conference at Mangalagangothri on Tuesday, he said that Renowned Scientist and National Research Professor at School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad Prof Goverdhan Mehta would be conferred with D.Sc honorary degree while Mumbai-based industrialist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Shashi Kiran Shetty and eminent educationist Professor B V R Chowdari would be conferred with D.Litt. honorary degree at the convocation ceremony.
Mangalore University will also award a total of 88 Doctor of Philosophy degrees including 11 in Arts, 63 in Science, 9 in Commerce and 5 in Education streams. A total of 37 gold medals and 63 cash prizes will be conferred to students.
Overall, there are 57 ranks - 40 students in PG courses and 17 in UG courses. Out of the total 34,627 candidates appeared for their final examinations in the year 2013-14, a total of 23,385 students passed the courses with a pass percentage of 67.53 percent, he informed.
He said that out of 23,385 candidates who had passed, around 1,315 candidates would receive their degrees in person at the convocation. Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka and Pro-Chancellor, Mangalore University R V Deshpande will confer the degrees to passed out students at the convocation ceremony.
Prof Goverdhan Mehta will be the chief guest on the occasion and deliver the Convocation address. Governor of Karnataka and Chancellor of Mangalore University Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala will preside over the Convocation, he said.
MU Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya and others were present on the occasion.
