Mangalore, May 4: The death of 3-year-old girl Srinidhi, whose body was fished out from a drain in Pumpwell area on Saturday, is a warning bell for the Mangalore City Corporation, which has paid no attention towards maintenance of drains in the city.

Srinidhi, the daughter of Hassan based Lokesh and Veda Poojary couple, was missing since Friday night. According to mother Veda Poojary, who is working as a warden of a hostel in the city, her daughter was last seen playing at Pumpwell, where a drain is under construction. The very next day the little girl was found dead in an uncovered drain at a little distance.
Local residents, who witnessed the tragedy, are blaming the administration for not taking any steps to avert such tragedies ahead of monsoon, despite knowing the fact that Pumpwell area is prone to water-logging during rains.
Had MCC paid a little bit attention towards the safety of innocent citizens who reside near such drains, Srinidhi would have been alive today, said Sunanda, who passes through the same route every day.
“This is not the first time we are witnessing such tragedy. Every year during rainy season our drains will claim human and animal lives thanks to the negligence of MCC,” said John, a local resident.
Pumpwell is one of the low-lying areas in Mangalore that get flooded after heavy rain normally. MCC should pay more attention to this side, he added.
We have several open and uncovered drains. Broken drain covers also posing threat for citizens in many areas. The MCC seems apathetic towards these problems, said Akhil, a college student.
