Mangaluru, Jul 4: In a shocking incident, a civil liberties activist in the city was died following an altercation at a police station.
David D’Souza, DK district president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, died at the Mangaluru Rural police station on Thursday night, revealed Stany Fernandes, an eye witness.
Mr. Fernandes was staying with Mr. D’Souza in a flat in Falnir for the last several weeks after an alleged assault on him by his son Steven Fernandes following an altercation he had with his wife.
The police had also called Ms. Sinthia Fernandes and Mr. Steven Fernandes to the station. They two groups were called to a cabin and the Police Inspector had a dialogue with them.
As allegations and counter-allegations continued, the inspector decided to call off the talks. As they were going out, Mr. D’Souza allegedly slapped Ms Sinthia Fernandes and Mr Steven Fernandes hit him in retaliation.
The policemen intervened and took Mr D’Souza outside the police station. As he was stepping out, Mr. D’Souza collapsed. The police arranged for a vehicle and took him to a private hospital where he died.
PUCL vice-president P.B. D’Sa asked Police Commissioner S. Murugan to order a detailed investigation into the incident.
Mr. Murugan said a judicial magistrate had taken the statements of the family members of Mr. Fernandes.
