Mangaluru, Jun 19: Members of Mangalore Bar Association staged a peaceful demonstration in the court premises at Karangalpady here on Friday and also boycotted court proceedings, seeking justice against the rejection of CBI’s request for sanction to prosecute 54 police personnel who were chargesheeted in connection with the violent incidents during a clash between the police, advocates and journalists on civil court premises in Bengaluru on March 2, 2012.
Addressing the demonstration, Mangalore Bar Association president S P Chengappa said that although the CBI had requested a sanction from the Karnataka state government to prosecute the police personnel for taking action on advocates and journalists during the clash three years ago, the state government rejected the permission sought by the investigating body. Suitable legal action has to be taken against the 54 police personnel responsible for their atrocities on advocates in the aftermath of the clash, he urged the state government, adding that members of the bar association would boycott the court proceedings on Friday to seek justice in connection with the issue.
Speaking on the occasion, general secretary of the association Raghavendra H V said that the bar association also sought an amendment to the Karnataka Advocates Welfare Fund Act, 1986 to enhance the Welfare Fund to be paid to advocates. At present, the Welfare Fund for advocates with 30 years of practice is Rs 4 lakh while that of advocates with 15 years of practice is Rs 1.5 lakh. Irrespective of the number of years in practice, the Welfare Fund for advocates should be enhanced to Rs 10 lakh, he urged.
He also urged the Karnataka Bar Council and state government to enhance the Welfare Fund to be paid on death or cessation of practice from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh. Similarly, the accident insurance for advocates should also be enhanced, along with stipend provided to new members of the bar association, he urged.
The members of the bar association wore red ribbons in protest against the police atrocities against the advocates in the Bengaluru court clash in 2012.
