Mangaluru, Mar 22: APD Foundation in collaboration with Karnataka State Forest Department, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd. (AWHCPL) observed 6th International Day of Forests on 21st March 2018 (Wednesday) at Tree Park Tannirbavi, here.

Mahesh Nayak, chief guest, inaugurated the event by planting a sapling along with Sri P. Shridhar, Range Forest Officer, Mangaluru, Abdullah A Rehman, Sri Venkateshwara, Deputy Range Officer, and Smt. Rekha Sachin, Forest Guard.

Addressing the gathering Mr Nayak said, “If we look around the city the high-rises stand taller than the trees, thereby taking away the natural beauty of the city. Mangalore, which was once a green city has turned into a concrete city thereby killing the clean and green environment.” He also urged the audience to differentiate between forests and urban greenery. “Forests are huge self sustaining eco systems which need to be conserved,” he said.

Range Forest Officer P Shridhar said, “Forests play a vital role in the economy of the country. Though other countries have been working towards advocating forestry, India’s forest wealth has been decreasing due to senseless cutting of trees. Now it is clear the people and governments have realized the adverse effects of this mass destruction. While we observe a day like this, we should see that we care for trees and discourage cutting them down.”

“This is part of APD Foundation’s plan to celebrate all the eco days of the year. Hence APD Team has decided to promote ‘Trees over Hoardings’ to highlight the need to reverse the trend of trees felled to accommodate the rising number of Hoardings in the city,” said Abdullah A Rehman, CEO and Founder of APD Foundation.

Students from St. Aloysius College, SDM and Dayanand Pai Govt College enthusiastically participated in various activities. They shared their ideas and expressed their concerns over nature which must not be destroyed for future generations. The debate was won by Vishvajeeth Bopanna, Akash GS and Riya Tomy of St. Aloysius College.

Preethesh Ray Prabhu and Annmaria Johny of St Aloysius College won the quiz competition. Shrijith R and Abhilash Shenoy of SDM College and Vishvajeeth Bopanna and Lalu Kurian of St Aloysius won first and second prize for poster making respectively. Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
