Mangaluru, Dec 7: The Anti Pollution Drive Foundation (APDF) imparted awareness on soil pollution to students of Lady Hill English Higher Primary School on December 4 as a part of World Soil Day, which is observed on December 5. The budding minds were enlightened with interactive audio visual presentation and motivational talk on the causes of soil pollution and its adverse affects. Topics such as ways to dispose waste without polluting the soil were dealt with, in a way easily understandable to children.

Madhav Ullal, an environmentalist and green enthusiast gave the children valuable information regarding soil conservation and importance of plants and trees to the environment. Speaking on disposing waste without polluting the soil, Mr Ullal emphasized on segregation of bio- degradable and non bio-degradable wastes. He told them of ways to use bio- degradable waste to make compost in the home backyard.

“Conservation of top soil is very important to have greener surroundings. We can conserve soil by planting more vegetation. The present generation should take responsibility and become protectors of the environment by planting more trees and nurturing them. Only then, the earth’s top soil will maintain its integrity,” he said and urged children to refrain from the use of plastics.

Headmistress of Lady Hill English Higher Primary School, Sr M. Silvia AC, spoke to her students and encouraged them to plant trees in their homes and school. She even announced a prize to the student who plants most trees in the current academic year.

Informative videos about classification of soil layers and conservation of top soil were shown to the students. There was also a presentation on common flower and fruit bearing trees with their health benefits that children could grow at home.
