Mangaluru, May 17: Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, celebrated the graduation day of its third batch of students at its campus in Innoli on Saturday. Students attired in their formals and belonging to all the branches of engineering were felicitated with an annual memoire book and memento.

BIT Graduation Day 1

Mr.K.Byrappa, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University was the chief guest for the function. Prof. Swapan Bhattacharya, Director, NITK Suratkal and Mr. Lakshminarayana, Group General Manager-HR, MRPL, were the guests of honour. The function was presided by the chairman and Managing Trustee of Bearys Academy of Learning Mr. Syed Mohammed Beary.

The Principal of BIT, Dr. K.Palakshappa, opened the proceedings by welcoming the guests, parents and students. The chief guest, Dr. K. Byrappa spoke about the crucial phase of the young students’ life where they would be transiting from being mere teenagers to responsible young adults. He drew the attention of the students to the ancient Indian Gurukul system where students were not merely given knowledge but also taught to be responsible citizens and useful to the society. He stressed upon the necessity for the students to be ethical and professional in their approach. Dr. Byrappa also advised the faculty that research and innovation was the only way to keep an academic atmosphere vibrant and urged them to go for collaborations with neighbouring institutions in this regard.

Mr. Syed Mohammed Beary then spoke and placed the fact before the students that it was a really sad plight to see that a country of 1.5 billion people did not have single academic institution in the top 200 of the world. He also expressed his concern over India not being able to produce good leaders of note though there are good managers. He advised the students that it was more important for them to have values and to be good to the society than aim for mere success. His firm advice was that students should not hanker after money, but should instead focus on acquiring knowledge.

Dr. Sapan Bhattacharya then took the dais. He praised the ambience surrounding BIT and opined that it was just ideal to acquire knowledge. He pointed out that there were only two kinds of academic institutions – the good and the average. He then elaborated the difference between the two and said that while an average institution merely produced educated graduates, a good institution produced personalities – men and women who made a difference in everything that they do. He then went on speak about the so-called ‘Centers of Excellence’ and opined that while a ‘Center’ can always be set up with suitable finances, ‘Excellence’ can only be evolved and not established.

Mr.Lakshminarayana then spoke to the students and talked to them about the importance of discipline. He pointed out to the students that we are adept at following discipline and regulations when out of the country. But the same individual fails to follow the same discipline while in India. To the contrary, he lays the blame on all around. He said that while an average person will always criticize others for the problems around a good person will first criticize and aim to better himself. He advised the students to enjoy their lives but not cross the ‘lakshman rekha’ at any point since that was the only way to achieve quality and excellence.

Dr. S.A. Khan, Dean R&D, BIT, gave a short presentation of the research efforts being undertaken by his team and himself in the domain of Supersonic aerodynamic research at the newly inaugurated advanced research laboratory at BIT.

Prizes were given away to the best outgoing students of various engineering departments.

BIT then felicitated Dr. M. A. Baig, Professor and HOD of Mechanical Engineering department and Dr Prameela Kolake, Department of Mathematics, for being conferred with their PhD. Degrees in their respective domains. Dr. Baig got his PhD from JNTU-Hyderabad for his work in the realm of Base Drag using Micro-jets while Dr. Prameela got her PhD from NIT-K, Surathkal for her work in the domain of Graph theory. The program concluded with the rendering of vote of thanks by the event coordinator Prof. Aziz Mustafa.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
