Mangaluru, Nov 9: “Owing to the relentless support of Congress ministers and MLAs to illegal activities in Dakshina Kannada district, the situation has escalated to a point that an activist was murdered in broad daylight,” said BJP leader and MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik.

Addressing the gathering at a protest organised by Mangaluru unit of BJP against the decline of law and order system in Dakshina Kannada district and Karnataka state, opposite Town Hall in Hampankatta here on Monday, he said that the elected representatives belonging to Congress party behaved such that the police department existed merely for their convenience.

“While a total of 23,000 girls and women went missing in the state after the Congress came to power in Karnataka, there are daily reports in the newspapers of girls being raped in the state. There are incidents where small children are raped in schools, and chain snatchers are on the rise. Crime has escalated while the police department has failed in preventing the crime rate from rising, he said, blaming the Congress government for its failure in good governance,” he said.

Pointing out that crime such as cattle trafficking, illegal sand mining and crimes against women was also prevalent in Dakshina Kannada, he said that people should become aware of all the illegal activities undertaken by the government. After the several fake promises made by CM Siddaramaiah, the people of the state have been bestowed with ‘Kattale Bhagya’ (power cuts), he said, adding that the people would declare their mandate in the next Assembly elections after two-and-a-half years.

BJP district leader Sulochana G Bhat lambasted the state government for compensating when a cattle trafficker Kabeer was shot dead in Shivamogga district, and sidelining the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Prashanth Poojary in Moodbidri.

“The state government is fooling around with the feelings of the majority. While Hindu youth are booked in cases under severe charges for no reason, scientists like Bhagwan get away without any case against them, even after making an inflammatory statement about consuming beef. There is a similar trend in Dakshina Kannada district of Congress MLAs lending support to accused involved in clashes with saffron activists,” she said.

Criticising the state government for declaring Tipu Jayanti, she said, “Tipu Sultan was a ruler who committed vast atrocities on about 80,000 people during his rule. He forced them to walk relentlessly from Goa to Mysore without food and water. He was one who destroyed several Hindu temples and forced conversions to Islam; one who forced Persian language on Kannada-speaking people in the state. Now, the government is set to observe his birth centenary despite him being a cruel ruler,” she said.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak, Ravishankar Mijar, former MLA Yogish Bhat, Sudheer Shetty and others were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
