Mangaluru, Apr 4: UT Khader, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare on Monday declared that Karnataka's first District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) will soon be opened at District Government Wenlock Hospital in the city.
Addressing media persons here the minister said that state government has planned to open DEIC in all districts in the state under the National Health Mission (NHM). The DEICs will be set up with the concept of 'Early Detection and Management of 4Ds - Defects at birth, Diseases in children, Deficiency conditions and Developmental delays including Disabilities.
He said that reducing Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the main objective behind the setting up of DEICs. Similarly, the programme will monitor the mental health of children and also increase enrolments in schools, Khader said adding that all children below 18 years will be covered under the scheme.
As per the NHM guidelines, 30 health defects under four categories - Defects at Birth, Deficiencies, Diseases and Development Delays and Disabilities - were identified. Doctors in government and private hospitals will have to refer cases to DEIC, in case children are diagnosed with any one of the 30 health defects, he said.
On facilities provided at the DEIC of Government Wenlock Hospital in the city, Khader said there will eight separate outpatient departments with specialists offering free service. The new DEIC at Wenlock Hospital will have counselors, psychiatrists, pediatricians, child psychologists, dentists, ENT specialists, audiologists, clinics for neuromuscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy.
Mr Khader said, he will request Chief minister Siddaramaiah, who will be in Mangaluru on his official tour on March 21, to inaugurate DEIC.
Physiotherapy block, tuberculosis wing, new outpatient department, digital x-ray unit, new block of the nursing college, disability ward and other new blocks of Wenlock Hospital will also be inaugurated on the occasion, he added.
