Mangaluru, Dec 30: The South Karnataka Salafi Movement, which had planned to organise a public event inviting Islamic scholar Dr Zakir Naik at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru on January 2, has announced that the event has been postponed by two months.

Revealing this to media persons in the city on Wednesday, SKSM vice-president Ismail Shafi said that the decision was taken after a meeting with Karnataka home minister Dr G Parameshwara.
Expressing displeasure over the ban order issued by Mangaluru city police chief S Murugan, he said that the intention of the event was to promote understanding between different faiths and spread harmony in the society.
He said that the ban order is an attack on the right to freedom of expression and freedom to practice and preach the religion. “This has hurt the sentiments of the Muslims,” he added.
Mr Shafi said that following the ban order a delegation of office bearers of met Dr Parmeshwara on December 28 and held a discussion with him in presence of Dakshina Kannada district in charge minister B Ramanath Rai. “Dr Parmeshwara requested us to postpone the event for a couple of months,” he said.
“Being an authority in comparative religion and having deep knowledge of sacred scriptures of major religions of the world including Hinduism and Islam, Dr Zakir Naik always tries to unite people upholding the theory of One God,” he said adding that the former never promoted hatred in his speeches.
He also asked those who level allegations against Dr Zakir Naik that he had made provocative speeches to produce proof for their claim. “Trouble mongers and liars are levelling false allegations against Dr Zakir Naik. He has never made even a single provocative remark in his speeches,” he said adding that some miscreants are circulating the edited and morphed video clippings of Dr Zakir Naik to mislead the people and police.
