Contingents of athletes representing Indian armed forces, Assam, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other teams participated in the march past. Cultural forms from different parts of Karnataka such as dollu kunita, pooja kunita, pilivesha, warrior dance, Kahale, Chamara, bhootakola and others were also depicted by various troupes in the march past.

The 19th Federation Cup championship is jointly organised by Government of Karnataka, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, Karnataka Amateur Athletics Association (KAAA) and Dakshina Kannada Athletics Association (DKAA).

The official flag of the Federation Cup championship was hoisted by Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille J Sumariwalla and Karnataka State Athletics Association Dr G Parameshwar.

Speaking after formally inaugurating the five-day athletics tournament, Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R V Deshpande said that India was a country with a population of more than  120 crores, but was unable to produce talented athletes proportionate to its population unlike countries such as China, UK and Japan. It is a challenge for athletic associations like AFI and Karnataka Athletics Association to boost the performances of athletes by providing good coaching to talented sportspersons, he pointed.

He said that Karnataka would become the first state in the country to bring in a sports policy for athletes shortly.

Addressing the gathering, AFI president Adille Sumariwalla said that the Federation was committed to providing quality coaching to improve the performances of athletes. The organisation will be sending more sportspersons to participate in international events from national camps. We will be looking to conduct an Indian Athletics Meet by the AFI this year, he informed.

Discouraging the participating athletes from using extra supplements to enhance their performances during the championship, he said that he hoped to see some outstanding performances and new talent emerging in the course of the five days of the championship.

Bollywood cine actor Sunil Shetty said that a surfing festival would be held in Mangaluru in the month of May, which would give a boost to tourism in Dakshina Kannada. He encouraged the athletes to perform well in the tournament while refraining from doping to enhance their performances.

Minister for Sports Abhayachandra Jain and Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader also addressed the gathering. Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo presided over the inaugural function.

DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim welcomed the guests and gathering. Dignitaries such as Dakshina Kannada SP Sharanappa, MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava, Shakunthala Shetty, Mayor Jacintha Alfred, Y Abdullah Kunhi, Dr Mohan Alva, N Vinay Hegde, H S Venkatesh, Manjunath Bhandary and several others were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
