The Flynas airline flight that departed from Mangaluru will land directly at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport at Madinah in Saudi Arabia. After their arrival, the pilgrims will be taken to their accommodation close to the Prophet’s Grand Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah.

Prior to the departure from Mangaluru, a formal send-off programme was held for the first batch of Hajj pilgrims at the old airport premises in Bajpe. Dakshina Kannada Khazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar blessed the programme and offered Dua for a safe and fulfilling pilgrimage of the pilgrims.

Speaking on the occasion, DK district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and fisheries minister K Abhayachandra Jain wished well for the pilgrims.

In his inaugural address to the pilgrims, Udupi district Khazi P M Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal said that performing the Hajj was an obligatory pilgrimage that brought peace and solace to those who undertook the holy pilgrimage. “During Hajj, you should pray not only for yourself and your family, but for the peace of the entire mankind. Being a citizen of the country, you should pray for the peace of the entire nation. At each place you visit as part of Hajj - Makkah, Madinah, Arafat and Mina – you should mainly pray for peace. You should also consider it as an obligation to pray for all of Allah’s creations,” he told the Hajj pilgrims.

Several dignitaries such as health minister U T Khader, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, Mayor Jacintha Vijaya Alfred, MLAs J R Lobo, Mohideen Bava and Vasanth Bangera, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Muslim Central Committee president Mohammed Masood, Airport Director J T Radhkrishna, DK District Wakf Advisory Committee chairman S M Rasheed, Mangalore Hajj Management Committee president Y Mohammed Kunhi, Udupi District Wakf Advisory Committee chairman Yahya Naqva and others were present on the occasion.

Hajj kits, along with their passport and Visa documents, and fruits were distributed to the batch of 134 pilgrims.

Around 660 registered Hajj pilgrims from various districts are scheduled to depart from Mangaluru International Airport this year, from August 16-20.

Speaking to reporters, Central Hajj Committee, Mumbai vice president M M Ahmed said that in the first phase, around 5,000 Hajj pilgrims were scheduled to depart for Saudi Arabia this year from the Central Hajj Committee. A total of 1,00,020 Hajj pilgrims from all over India are set to perform Hajj this year from the Central Hajj Committee, he informed, adding that the number of Hajj pilgrims had decreased from the previous year since the Saudi Arabian government had reduced the quota of pilgrims by 20 percent owing to large-scale constructions in the country.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
