Mangaluru, Dec 15: œEducation has now been commercialized. Earlier, children were sent to schools and madrasas to gain knowledge. Today, materialism is being given more importance than education, lamented former Karnataka education minister B A Moideen.
He was speaking at the launch of 'Shikshana-Tarabeti Kale' a Kannada book on art of educational training published by city based Shanthi Prakashana, here recently.
Speaking on the occasion, retired principal of Mangalore University College Sathyanarayana M said that it was necessary in today's world that teachers should identify each student's strengths instead of picking on their faults. This book is meant not only for teachers and tutors, but only meant for parents as it guides them in raising their children.
Lecturer N Shivaprakash said that our educational situation had not changed from what it was 50 years ago. Today, textbooks are prepared with examinations in mind, not learning, he said, adding that teachers should change their point of view towards imparting education to students.
Principal of Badria PU College Dr N Ismail also spoke on the occasion.
In his presidential address, manager of Shanthi Prakashana Mohammed Kunhi said that in the present scenario education had become limited to providing information. However several intellectuals engaging in criminal activities is proof that mere information is not enough. Instead, education should teach the difference between right and wrong, he said.
