Mangaluru: Former Minister B A Mohideen laid to rest amidst tears and prayers

Mangaluru, Jul 10: Farmer Karnataka Higher Education Minister B A Mohideen, who passed away today morning in Bengaluru, was laid to rest with full state honours amidst tears and prayers in his native village Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru after Isha prayers. 

81-year-old politician had been suffering from age related illness. Recently, he was taken to Bengaluru and admitted to the M S Ramaiah Hospital where he breathed his last around 6 am today. 

The body was kept in a residence in Bengaluru for a brief period in the morning wherein chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, former chief minister Siddaramaiah among others paid their homage. Later it was taken in a special ambulance, which reached Bajpe at around 5 p.m.

Thousands of people including his family members, fans, well-wishers and local residents, apart from a host of political, social and religious leaders, thronged his house at Muranagara in Bajpe to see the departed leader’s face for the last time. The final rites were conducted at the graveyard near the Eidgah Juma Masjid at Bajpe. 

Among the leaders who attended the funeral were Karnataka Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar, Urban Development Minister U T Khader, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Farnandes, DK Deputy Commissioner Sesikanth Senthil and MLC Ivan D’Souza.

Mohideen was first elected to the state Legislative Assembly from Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada in 1978.

He was also a Member of the Legislative Council from 1990 to 2002 and was the Chief Whip in the Legislative Council from 1994 to 1995.

He later went on to become the Minister for Higher Education and Industry under Chief Minister JH Patil from 1995 to 1999 and was recognised by the state government for his service as an honest, upright statesman with the Devaraj Urs award in 2016.

"In his sad demise we have lost a  veteran leader. We remember him as one among the close companions of Devaraja Urs," read a statement from CM Kumaraswamy.

Udupi, Nov 22: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has officially confirmed Narendra Modi’s visit to Udupi on November 28 and shared his detailed schedule with the Karnataka chief secretary.

According to the itinerary, the Prime Minister will land at Mangaluru International Airport from Delhi at 11:05 am and depart for Udupi by helicopter at 11:10 am. He is expected to arrive at the Adi Udupi helipad at 11:35 am.

The earlier plan for a roadshow has been cancelled. Instead, PM Modi will proceed directly to Sri Krishna Math at 12 pm, where he will have darshan of Sri Krishna and address participants of the Laksha Kanta Geetha Gayana event.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to depart from the Adi Udupi helipad at 1:35 pm, returning to Mangaluru Airport before leaving for Goa at 2 pm.

The state administration has been directed to make all necessary arrangements for the visit.
