Mangaluru, Dec 29: In the wake of threats issued by the saffron outfits against New Year’s Eve parties in the coastal city, Citizens Forum For Mangalore Development has sought the Karnataka Home Minister’s attention towards what it observed as the failure of police department to provide security to citizens.

A delegation of the Forum on Friday called on Mangaluru City Police Commissioner T R Suresh and urged him curb immoral policing and take appropriate action against the leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal for creating fear on the eve of New Year. The delegation led by Vidya Dinker, convener of the Forum also submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy through the city’s top cop.

Here is the full text of the memorandum:

To
The Home Minister
Government of Karnataka
Bengaluru ‐ 1

Through:
Sri T. R. Suresh, IPS
Commissioner, Mangaluru City Police
Mangaluru

Dear Sir,

Sub:    1. Increase in right wing ImMoral Policing/rowdyism in Dakshina Kannada

2.    Atmosphere of fear during New Year due to Bajran Dal/ VHP threats

3.    Failure of police department to provide security to citizens against the above

With a deep sense of dismay we are hereby approaching you for your immediate intervention in addressing the deteriorating law and order situation in Dakshina Kannada, especially in Mangaluru City due to the increase in anti-social activities by right wing elements.

The following is a brief summary of disturbing developments in the recent past:

1.    It has widely reported in the media that the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police gave audience to Bajrang Dal and VHP to press their demands regarding curbing New Year Celebrations. Subsequently leaders of the Bajrang Dal and VHP issued threatening statements holding the ‘police department solely responsible for any untoward happenings on that day’. (Refer Annexures 1 & 2)

2.    A subsequent police advisory dated 28‐12‐2017 issued by the office of Mangaluru City Police Commissioner (Annexure ‐ 3) regarding New Year Celebrations unmistakably reveals that the police department has completely abdicated its responsibility to protect the good citizens of Mangalore from anti‐social elements who are bent on disrupting social harmony.

3.    We object to the tone and tenor of the police advisory which is offensive to the dignity and civic rights of the citizens of Mangalore who have every right to celebrate New Year. (Refer Point 12 in the Advisory. It is unclear who this is directed at and can be easily misused by goonda elements or even law enforcers against party‐going girls and women) After reading the advisory, both its content and its overall spirit leaves us in no doubt that the Police Department has decided to act as an enforcer of the unreasonable demands and diktats of the Bajrang Dal and VHP. In fact the advisory puts so many stiff conditions on the citizens and the event organizers that instead of instilling confidence among the citizenry, it seems to make it impossible to celebrate New Year in any meaningful way.

4.    Mangaluru City Police has specified 12:00 midnight as the deadline for concluding any public New Year events. This is like making a mockery of the citizens as this very moment (12:00 midnight) marks the onset of the New Year. On the other hand, we learnt from news reports that Bangalore Police are allowing 2:00 a.m. as the deadline and there is no reason for Mangaluru City Police to discriminate against its citizens other than their own incompetence or reluctance in dealing with goons belonging to right wings outfits.

5.    Despite Bajrang Dal and VHP issuing open threats, Mangaluru City Police have not given any assurance of protection to the citizens against ‘vigilante’ goondaism on New Year night. In fact while the aforementioned police advisory imposes stiff condition on citizens, it contains not even a single word of caution to these immoral policing groups against interfering in the New Year celebrations or taking the law into their own hands. They have also made no efforts to curb their activities, secure bonds from those issuing threats/known offenders or to place potential trouble makers under preventive custody.

6.    The above situation has caused a general fear psychosis and needless trauma for the citizens who were planning to celebrate New Year in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Many organizers of New Year events are in limbo and people are scared to attend New Year parties. This indicates that it is the Bajrang Dal and VHP mafia elements who control this city and not civic administration and the police.

In addition to the above, we wish to draw your attention to the following recent developments:

1.    Right wing elements are actively trying to import and embed the fake concept of ‘Love Jihad’ into Dakshina Kannada to instigate communal tensions. Two incidents have been blown out of proportion under this concept and there is every likelihood of the situation getting out of control if their activities are not curbed.

2.    A local godman called Rajashekaranand Swami of Vajradehi Mutt has announced the formation of his Special Task Force (STF) against ‘Love Jihad’ to keep an eye on and rein in Hindu girls. If this is allowed to go unchecked, we can expect more of organised trouble in the near future.
3.    Increasing incidences of ImMoral Policing are being reported since the past few months and police department is doing nothing to curb it.

Due to the above reasons, we are deeply disappointed with the Mangaluru City Police. The Mangalore region was notorious for imMoral Police goondaism of right wing outfits. This was one of the reasons for the huge victory of Congress Party in the previous assembly elections as people had placed their hopes in your party to curb right wing mafia activities.

Though your government has given us a brief spell of peace, we are alarmed to see anti-social elements once again attempting to take charge of the city and dismayed to observe the inability of the police to respond effectively to its growing menace to the public.
We request you to initiate urgent action regarding the above.

Thank You

Yours Sincerely,

Sd‐

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
