Mangaluru, Jun 17: A dolphin with multiple injuries washed ashore at Hosabettu on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday morning.
As soon as the news began to spread, the locals thronged the sea shore. Local fishermen, who noticed the stranded fish, came to its rescue and provided first aid treatment too.
The white belly of dolphin had turned red and there were many cuts on its body, the fishermen said.
It is suspected that the cuts were caused by the blades of ships as the dolphins sometimes follow ships they sight in the sea.
Yathish Baikampady, CEO of Panambur Beach Development Tourism Project said that the fishermen could not leave the dolphin into the deep sea owing to the rough sea.
He said that two kinds of dolphins frequented the Arabian Sea, the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus Capensis) which had a white underside, and the spinner dolphin (Stenella Longirostris) which is grey.
A fisherman said that dolphins usually come close to shore in search of food. They can often be seen playing in groups near the breakwater constructed by the New Mangalore Port.
