Mangaluru, May 16: Within two days after Laxmidas Jewellers in the city was burgled, Mangaluru police nabbed two north Indians and recovered valuables worth more than Rs. 10 lakh from them.
Police Commissioner S. Murugan told presspersons here on Saturday that the accused, Mohammed Ifthikar Alam (22), a native of Rampur in Purnia district, Bihar, and Mohammed Sabeer (22), from Araria in Bihar, burgled Laxmidas Jewellers on Balmatta Road on May 17.
They had taken away valuables including silver ornaments, a laptop, cell phones and other items. The accused had also made a vain bid to steal valuables from a travel house in the vicinity.
Presently residing in Bengaluru, the accused were also reportedly involved in cases of attempt to theft and assault, registered at Sampigehalli and Hulimavu police station limits there. While Alam is a resident of Devasandra Main Road in K.R. Puram, Sabeer is a resident of Shikaripalya in Bengaluru.
Mr. Murugan said a police team led by Mangaluru North Police Inspector Shantharam arrested the accused in Bunder. The accused were arrested during their attempt to sell the stolen items. They have been produced before the jurisdictional magistrate.
Murder accused held
Meanwhile, the Central Crime Branch personnel on Friday arrested Umesh Poojari (29), a resident of Someshwara, on charges of murder for gain. The accused, along with three others, had allegedly murdered Vidyaraj (16) nine years ago and took away Rs. 62,000 cash from him.
Mr. Murugan said the victim was working as an office boy with Sona Bankers at Rao and Rao Circle in the city. When he was on his way to B.C. Road to hand over Rs. 62,000 cash to a banker as per his employer’s instructions on June 3, 2006, Umesh, Sandeep Shetty, Rajesh and Pavan, allegedly kidnapped him. Vidyaraj was strangled to death and his body was found at Periyashanthi near Nelyadi on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway.
While the other three accused had been arrested long back, Umesh was at large and was nabbed by crime branch personnel near Nanthoor.
Mr. Murugan announced that the personnel involved in the nabbing operation would suitably rewarded.
