Mangaluru, May 31: The organic agricultural fair organised to create awareness on organic produce by the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments at Kadri Park in the city was inaugurated on Tuesday. Participating in the fair Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said more awareness programmes should be conducted to promote organic farming in the district.
"Dakshina Kannada is an organic farming district, but commercialization of the agriculture sector prompted farmers to think of getting high yield through chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Use of chemicals may boost yield, but its consequences on the health of people in the long run are disastrous," he said.
The MP said organic farming has more market potential. "More people prefer organic produce and farmers must think of adopting organic farming methods," he added.
Joint Director of Agriculture Department H?Kempegowda said 4,512 organic farmers in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts will receive organic certification from Karnataka State Organic Certification Agency.
“Organic Farmers' Regional Federation, comprising 44 groups of organic farmers, has been formed in three districts through the Agriculture Department,” he said.
A total of 4,512 organic farmers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts have formed a regional federation of organic farmers with 44 societies registered as per the Karnataka Cooperative Societies Act, Kempegowda said while addressing the participants of Organic Farmers' Fair held under the aegis of departments of agriculture and horticulture at Kadri Park here on Tuesday. The first phase of organic certification by the KSOCA has been completed, he said.
As many as 1,008 organic farmers from Dakshina Kannada district, 632 from Udupi and 2,872 from Chikkamagaluru has registered for organic farming certification from KSOCA, he said. "Organic farming is promoted to increase the fertility of the soil in a natural way. It helps in increasing nutrients in the soil," he added.
