Mangaluru, Jun 8: A leopard which was trapped in a snarl at Kallakumeru near Kinnigoli in Mangaluru taluk was rescued by officials of the Forest Department and the Pilikula Biological Park on Sunday.
A Forest Department official said that the young male leopard that got caught in the trap was noticed by villagers at about 7 a.m. The snarl could have been laid by someone to capture wild boars that were damaging crops.
H. Jayaprakash Bhandary, director, Pilikula Biological Park, said that a scientific officer and a sharp shooter of the park went to the spot and tranquilised the leopard before shifting it to a cage of the Forest Department. As the animal’s forelimbs had been trapped in the snarl, it was given primary treatment.
Mr. Bhandary said that the park had nine leopards now. Several of them are rescued ones. The one rescued on Sunday was not brought to the park as the park is not in a position to keep any more leopards. Forest officials are taking care of it.
