Mangaluru, May 14: Demanding the withdrawal of the proposed golf course and resort project in Bengere in Mangaluru city corporation limits, locals residents led by DYFI city unit staged a sit-in protest in front of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner’s office here on Wednesday.
Addressing the protestors, CPI(M) leader Vasanth Achari alleged that the seashore in Bengere would be compromised by vested interests for the sake of building a golf course and resort for the elite section of the society. The day is not far when the residents living along the coast in Bengere will be evicted and rendered homeless to make room for a golf course in the name of tourism development. In the name of development, the BJP-led union government is making way for empowering the corporate sector by turning a blind eye to the needs of the poor, he criticised.
Speaking on the occasion, DYFI city unit president B K Imtiyaz demanded that the boulders stacked on the Superstar maidan in Bengere – which was the only ground for youth to pursue their sports and other physical activities – should be removed from the spot within a period of 15 days. Failing to do this will result in the removal of the stone boulders by the local youth themselves, he warned.
Addressing the protest, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla said that the progressing work on the construction of the enclosure wall for the golf course should be halted. The injustice meted out to fishing folk living in Thannirbavi, Kudroli-Bengere, Kasba Bengre and Thota Bengere by the tourism department in the name of development, should be set right. The families residing in Bengere in their own homes should be given proper title deeds and registered. The houses without electricity connections should be immediately provided with electricity, he urged, also demanding supply of drinking water to the houses.
He also urged that basic medical facilities such as doctors and round-the-clock delivery services should be implemented in the primary health centre in Bengere. The protestors submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner with their demands.
Corporator Dayananda Shetty, Santhosh Kumar Bajal, Rafeeq Harekala, farmer union leader Yadava Shetty and several local residents participated in the sit-in protest.
