Mangaluru, Sep 2: A major fire broke out at a garment shop on the Market Road in the city on Wednesday causing a huge loss to the owner.
The inferno started destroyed garments stored inside Bharath Collections located on the first floor of the Jayanti Complex near cities popular vegetable market in the evening.
A short circuit led to the fire mishap, according to Hari Singh, the owner of the garment shop, who is a native of Rajasthan. However, he has sought the help of authorities to ascertain the exact cause.
During the mishap Mr Singh was not present in the shop, which was remained closed on Wednesday due to Bharat Bandh organised by labour unions.
It is learnt that a local resident identified as Girish Pai noticed the smoke coming out on the first floor of Jayanti Complex and immediately informed the police and other residents.
Due to less vehicular movement on city roads, three fire tenders - two from Pandeshwar and one from Kadri – reached the spot. It took at least an hour for the fire brigade to douse the flames completely.
The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be around Rs 25 lakh. However, the exact amount of loss is yet to be ascertained, police sources said.
