Mangaluru, Apr 11: The Karnataka Amateur Athletics Association has planned to install permanent floodlights with the help of government at Mangala Stadium in the city. However, the impending 19th Federation Cup senior national athletics championship is expected to be held at the same stadium under temporary floodlights.
Inspecting the venue and preparations for the Federation Cup that gets under way on April 30, G Parameshwara, president, KAAA told reporters it makes sense for Mangala Stadium to have permanent floodlights. "The city for long has had a good history when it comes to producing champion athletes," Parameshwara said, adding that permanent floodlights will only aid more budding talent to come up the ranks and don state and national colours.
Incidentally, K Abhayachandra Jain, minister for youth empowerment, sports and fisheries who was present alongside, has shied away from taking a call on permanent floodlights, especially for the Federation Cup.
K Abhayachandra Jain, minister for youth empowerment, sports and fisheries who was present alongside, had reasoned that time for executing this project is not enough. The amount of funding it entails would require tendering and hurried execution would invite charges of kickbacks.
However, Jain nodded in unison when Parameshwara said the KAAA would move the government seeking funding for the project. He advised Manjunath Bhandary, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Athletics Association to prepare and forward a proposal to the KAAA, which, in turn, would take up the matter with the state government through the department of youth empowerment and sportss.
